OUR JEAN WOOL

  Our Jean Cloth is woven exclusively for Blockade Runner Inc. We feel it is the best reproduction of the original on the market today. All of our pants, shells & frocks are made from this top of the line textile. You be the judge, take a look and compare. I'm sure you will be just as impressed with it as I was when I watched that first yard come off the loom.
  We have been phasing in BRI Jean Wool since Jan. of 2005. It has taken us that long to use all the Kline's we had in stock. Now almost 2 years later, even our most demanding customers have been thrilled with the quality of our garments. We have shipped thousands of garments made from our new jean to our customers here in the states and around the world and have not had a single one returned due to unsatisfactory cloth.
  Our garments are available in three different colors. Taupe on brown, taupe (light gray) color wool yarn woven with brown cotton yarn which gives the cloth a nice light brown tint. Natural gray jean wool, gray wool yarn woven with gray cotton yarn. It's gray, I don't know how else to explain it. Brown jean wool, brown wool yarn woven with brown cotton yarn.
  The photos below will give you some idea of the colors but remember the color may look different depending on the monitor you are viewing.

COLUMBUS DEPOT JACKETS

  Columbus depot shell jacket. Most experts agree that there are only 8 surviving Columbus depot shell jackets and all of them are cut differently. We have chosen to make two. The first jacket, in the photo (left) is the McDonnell jacket (circa 1863) and second, the Woodward pattern (1862) which is described further below.

  The McDonnell jacket belonged to John McDonnell of Cowen's battery, 1st Miss. Art. Yes, this jacket belonged to an artilleryman. Little attention was given to branch of service trim if you did not have a coat. The front of the body is curved and the bottom of the back has a slightly "pointed tail". It has 2 interior patch pockets and the lining is made of cotton Osnaburg. It has a 6 button front. The button holes are hand sewn and 7/8" dished wooden button are sewn on. (We can leave the button holes off if you prefer to do your own.) It has one piece sleeves. The sleeve lining is hand set. The single row of top stitching on the original was done by machine but unless you requested otherwise, we do it by hand.
(We can leave it off if you prefer to do your own top stitching.) The exterior of the collar is blue wool while the inside of the collar is the same jean wool as the body of the coat.

**There are no known original Columbus depot jackets that use blue jean cloth for the collar and cuffs**

  The blue wool cuff trim is 2 ½ inches wide. McDonnell was paroled at Vicksburg miss. in July of 1863 and did not return to service, so the jacket is dated to no later than July of 1863. The original is currently housed at the Miss. state historical museum in Jackson Miss.

The hand worked top stitching is great! A shame that there are so many other sutlers producing garments which will never earn the word: "Authentic".

  The Woodward Columbus depot jacket is dated at Nov. of 1862 as that is when Elijah Woodward of the 9th Ky. Inf. was reported as a deserter. The coat has 2 interior pockets set into the Osnaburg lining. The sleeve lining is hand set. The front of the body is curved. It is cut straight across the back. It has one piece sleeves. It has a 5 button front. The button holes are hand sewn. (We can leave the button holes off if you prefer to do your own.) It comes with 7/8" dished wooden buttons sewn on. It has a single row of hand stitched top stitching. (We can leave the top stitching off if you prefer to do your own.)

  There are countless photo's of Confederates in western depot style jackets. A lot of people have started calling these "mystery" jackets. There are quite a few surviving examples that have never been linked to a specific depot and probably never will. MOBILE DEPOT JACKET


  The mobile depot jacket, is another of the deep south jackets that can not be positively identified. That is to say, you could not prove it in court. But, many of those who study the subject think it is a good bet. The original from which this jacket was copied can be found in the time life series book "Echoes of Glory" located on page 141. We have posted several photos here so you can see the quality and the meticulous detail of the work as compared to the original.
I will put this jacket up against anyone else's mobile depot. Compare it to the original, that's where the rubber meets the road. Like all of our jean cloth uniforms ,it is made from Pat Kline's jean wool. Our mobile depot jacket has a 7 button front with dished wooden buttons. It has one piece sleeves and it is lined with cotton Osnaburg. The sleeve lining is hand set (bottom left photo). It has an outer slash pocket just under the left breast (top center photo) . It has one inner pocket set into the lining at the right breast. The collar is slightly more square than our other jackets (as per the original). All of the button holes are hand stitched and there are two lines of top stitching all done by hand (top right photo) .
