There could really be examples of these or maybe just a lot of people are wrong. Or maybe this info is out there and it's just not getting back to me but so many people have ask that I have finally given in.
As you can see we've used a black wool background with an outer edge single line border of gold bullion. The Maltese cross itself is made from silver bullion. They measure 1.25 inches square and they look great. I've got to sew a set on and re-shoot the photo so you can fully appreciate them. I know that if your doing a Chaplains impression not too many folks are going to bust your chops over these. Just be forewarned it could happen.

I am one of the people who uses Maltese crosses on my Chaplain's frock coat, both of which I got from y'all. In any case the reference I used as a basis for it is in the book, "Faith in the Fight." Included in the section on Confederate Chaplains between pages 73 and 75 is this reference that the Chaplains of the Army of Tennessee: "considered the best and cheapest uniform, under the circumstances, to be gray cloth with black facing, and trimming, like the surgeon's uniform." They proposed a Maltese cross an inch in diameter to be worn on each side of the collar like a major's star.

UNION DOUBLE ROW SHOULDER BOARDS
Brand new pair of union double row shoulder boards. These shoulder boards are not for the faint of heart. All officers had to supply their own uniforms and accouterments, so you can imagine it would take a little brass to wear there. Gen. Custer would have worn them and added flashing lights if possible. There are plenty of original photos showing officers of all grades wearing this type of shoulder board. There are even examples of triple row, but I don't think I'll go there.
