BALL GOWNS

BALL GOWN TYPE II, ONE PIECE

This is the most economical style of our Ball Gowns.
Connie is wearing a lovely one piece Ball Gown with a maroon top that is cut
"off the shoulders" and trimmed around the neck line with a ruffle of the same material. (Ruffle not included in the Type II)

Half length puff sleeves with small decorative black ribbon laced through the "cuff" that actually work to draw the sleeve snug just above your elbow, so the sleeve will keep there graceful shape even when the ball goes on into the wee hours of the morning.

The corsage of the bodice is cut straight at the waist and is piped with the same material. (not visible in photo) It bottons up the back by the way of covered buttons matching the dress. The corsage is lined with an appropriate color cotton and is boned where needed depending on the size.
The skirt is made from a rich dark black polished cotton. The skirt is plaited and sewn onto the bodice.

This style gown is elegant in it's simplicity, beautiful without being brash.
It can easily be adorned with ruffles, lace or trim depending on the occasion.

HAVE YOU NOTICED?

If you have an opportunity to visit one of the large civil war era collections of dresses by all means do so. But while there take notice of one thing that caught my attention. Many of the dresses and skirts that were adorned with ruffles, bows and lace had a commonality that I found fascinating as I had never considered it before that very moment.
The adornments were sewn on ever so slightly! They looked as if they would just pop off with the slightest tug. Now after but little consideration this made perfect sense to me, but I would love to hear your opinion on this after you have looked for yourself. Bows, Ribbons and Lace do not wash well. It would be much easier to remove them, clean the dress, and then reattach them. Have you every tried to iron a bow back into its original shape after its been washed? Take my word for it, once is more that enough. It is an experience you'll not soon forget.
And what if I wanted to change, or remove the trimmings all together, the mode of attachment that I observed on the originals would certainly make this task much simpler.
Now perhaps this is common knowledge to you but for me it's just one of those little things that make research so much fun!
