JERRY'S USED BOOKS

USED BOOKS OF EVERY DISCRIPTION
MORE ADDED JAN. 10, 2011

NEW ADDITIONS ARE AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.

As you may well be aware I have a collecting fetish. This fetish knows no category, bounds nor limits but for some time now books have been the dominant species of my collecting. Their forage has grown scarce and they have begun fighting amongst themselves - so in accordance with the laws of nature it is time to thin the herd. My books are simply over flowing my office, study and various other nooks and crannies of my home. Since my fear of being crushed under a pile of poorly stacked volumes of Bruce Canton is greater than my desire to keep my eclectic pounds of parchment I have decided to offer a few of them for sale. I hope you can find something here that you will enjoy. Books are one of the few things I don't mind passing on as long as they are going to a good home. You will give them a good home will you not?

There is no rhyme nor reason to the way I have them listed. You will find a Civil War era book and listed next will be a World War II followed by a copy of Mad Magazine. There is only one page of used books, one long - long - long page. So scroll till your hearts content. Should you have a question about one of the books please email me, I will be happy to answer any and all.

MOTORS 1960 "TRUCK EDITION"

When I was a kid this book was the top of the line in mechanical self instruction. If you could not do it from this book you had to go find an older mechanic and beg him to show you how. Every service station and garage worth their salt had this book (and every edition they could buy) on the shelf. This is the very hard to find "TRUCK" edition and contains all of the information needed to work on any truck motor gas or diesel built between 1952 and 1960. This book deals with damn near every aspect of the vehicle, Not Just the Motor! Even those new fangled automatic transmissions. (they'll never catch on)

VAMPIRES IN EUROPE 1929

  Book Review by Amelia Hill
The Vampire in Europe is Montague Summers's 1929 follow-up to The Vampire: His Kith and Kin. While the latter work has a broad range of subjects - including what vampires are, how to kill them, and an extensive history of vampire fiction - The Vampire in Europe concentrates on vampire legends in ancient Greece and Rome, England and Ireland, modern Greece, and Eastern Europe.

It is important to realize, before reading his works, that Summers is not merely interested in the vampire as a legend. "That a large number of cases of vampirism must be accounted certain only the most prejudiced will deny," he writes in his introduction. He was ordained a deacon in the Church of England and shortly thereafter converted to Catholicism and began writing about the occult from a Catholic (if unorthodox) perspective. In addition to The Vampire: His Kith and Kin and The Vampire in Europe, he published two books on witchcraft, as well as the first English translation of the Malleus Maleficarum (1928), and "The Werewolf" (1933). He believed that such creatures were the work of the devil and strongly advocated the reinstatement of the death penalty for witches.

The Vampire in Europe is meticulously researched, including hundreds of footnotes and quoted passages (most given without English translations, which is downright frustrating for a reader not familiar with Latin, German, Italian, and several versions of Greek). Despite this fact (or perhaps because of it), the book often reads like the ravings of a mad professor. Summers includes unsubstantiated anecdotes, long passages of translation, and even an entire chapter of Varney the Vampire, whenever it seems to occur to him and not in any sort of organized fashion. He rambles from one example to another until the reader loses track of the subject, with some material so off-topic that it seems suited for entirely different chapters, and ends abruptly without much of an attempt to tie the disparate legends together.

Still, if one can manage to plod through the more awkward parts of Summers's writing style, The Vampire in Europe is an abundant resource for those interested in the Occult, European folklore, or the history of vampire legends. Lovers of vampire fiction should read this book, as well as The Vampire: His Kith and Kin (especially the last chapter, "The Vampire in Literature"), to learn about the vampire legend before he became the star of the paranormal romances flooding the market today-and writers, to pick up ideas for how to make your vampires stand out from the crowd. (Did you know, for example, that according to some Eastern European legends a human can protect themselves by tossing a hawthorn branch or spilling grain, which the vampire will be compelled to pick up and thus forget his prey?) One need not believe it all true, as did Montague Summers, in order to find The Vampire in Europe a fascinating study of folklore.

I HAVE THIS BOOK VERY UNDER PRICED! It is ex library and it's condition is a solid "Good" bordering on "Very Good".

FANNY'S PORTFOLIO 1853

"FERN LEAVES from FANNY'S PORT FOLIO",is one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. Written in 1853 it is a collection of short stories that are commentaries on everyday life. A few are sad but most of these stories you will find very funny, poking fun at the accepted norms of the time. A view I have not found in any other book! It is not in the best condition, if your very forgiving it would rate "good" but it is solid enough to handle without undue concern, it won't fall apart on you, all the pages are present and affixed soundly as is the text block to the spine and covers. You can see the tear on the cloth cover of the spine. That's about the worst damage it has. The pages are not dark, there is some mild foxing.

THE DARK MOUNTAIN

The dark mountain is a morality tale of a wondering traveler trying to find his way back home. That's about all I can tell you cause I fell asleep while trying to read it. It is a great prop. I can tell you that! Measuring only 4 inches by 6 inches containing 186 pages, written and published in 1858, it is in very good condition, the corners are bumped but that is it. It's other wise sound as a pound. Wrap it in a good period scrap of cloth, tie it with some hemp string and drop it in your haversack. At your next living history when you display your personal items for the public the other re-enactors will be so jealous.

1854 PATENT BOOK

This 1854 Patent book is in good condition. You can see by the photo that there is a little damage to the spine but it detracts very little from the look or usefulness of this book. This is Vol. II which has all the drawings. It is very useful by itself but even more so when you find a copy of Vol. I which has the descriptions and the person's name and address who filed the patent request. I love having these books around, take a look at the monkey wrench in the top left hand corner of photo # 3. How many times have you heard people discuss whether that style was period correct or not? This book is full of "argument settlers". Every patent accepted for the year of 1854 will have it's official drawing in this book. From firearms to jewelry clips, Farm equipment to cannon it's all here.

ORACLES OF NOSTRADAMUS
1940 PRINTING

This hard cover 1940 printing of the, "Oracles of Nostradamus" is in very good condition with the exception of a missing blank cover page. No information is lost, you may not have even noticed but I thought it best to point it out. As you can see from the photo the dust jacket is a little on the ruff side but I personally care little for dust jackets. This book is 366 pages in length, the writings of Nostradamus with translations/commentary/explanations by Charles Ward. Also included is a 1981 newspaper clipping regarding Nostradamus and predictions for WW III. Anyone can own a new copy of this book but having a 1940 edition, well that's a little more impressive.

THE SECOND WORLD WAR

"The Second World War", by Winston Churchill and the editors of Time Life. Originally printed in 1960 this is of the second printing in 1966. It is the special edition for young readers, in 1960 that meant add more photos which is exactly what they did. It's the norm today but was quite exceptional for the time. The information, type and text are the same, typical Churchill. In my opinion that's a good thing. 384 pages, no dust jacket, some dirt on a few pages. Good overall condition, tight binding, no loose pages. This book is about 3 times the size of today's books from Time Life series.

CALEB PETTENGILL U.S.N.

CALEB PETTENGILL U.S.N. by George Fielding Eliot, published in 1956.
A marvelous yarn concerning young Mr. Caleb Pettengill of New England who commands a vessel in the Union Navy during the Civil War, whose flamboyant charm is irresistible to women, and who believes passionately not only in the Union cause but also in the revolutionary new uses of steam, ironclad ships, explosive shell and rifled guns. In this impetuous and ambitious young officer, George Fielding Eliot has created a personality that stands, with Captain Horatio Hornblower, as one of the strongest and most appealing characters of historical fiction. A lusty and exciting sea story that brings vividly to life, through the experiences of one man and his ship, the birth pangs of the steam Navy and the trials of the men who manned it during an era that has never ceased to fire the imaginations of American readers.

This is a fictional account, not history but a good story.

After a bloody massacre at Fredericksburg, an aimless and muddy march up and sown the banks of the Rappahannock, and a catastrophe of confusion at Chancellorsville, this army took a firm stand on the hills of the west of a small Pennsylvania town called Gettysburg and finally turned the fortunes of war against the Confederacy.
